North Massapequa is located in the town of Oyster Bay. As of the 2000 census the population was 19,152 with a total area of 3 square miles, all of which is land. The Massapequa area harmonizes bustling retail centers and extensive commercial development with lovely parks, shoreline vistas, recreational amenities, and tree-lined neighborhoods. The name Massapequa is taken from Marsapeagues, the Indian group which originally inhabited the land. The Indian word “Massapeauke”, means "Great Water Land," which suits Massapequa’s south shore location and the many manmade lakes located within the area.
